HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

1943
On April 12, 1943 the two Norwegians, Messrs. Leif Fr. Koxvold and Odd Melvold founded their company under the name of ME-KOX Industry, Melvold &  Koxvold. The production  consisted of articles of pressed cellulose fibres.  


1949
The first idea with peat for plant pots (flowerpots).


1953
The first real production of pots, established in the centre of Oslo. The pots were marketed under the
name of "Huminalpot".


1954
The contract with Geo. J. Ball Inc., W. Chicago for sales right in America was signed. Geo J. Ball has
had the sole rights on sales of Jiffy products in North America since then.


1955
The name "Jiffy" was used on the company's products for the first time.




1956
3 April, the building of the pot factory at Grorud, Oslo, Norway, was started.


1957
The factory at Grorud was ready, and 6 machines in production.


1958
A/S Jiffy Pot was registered as a company, and the first joint stock company founded. 2 July - the First International Jiffy Conference was held in Oslo. The factory was expanded and there was space for more machines.


1959
A factory was established in Denmark, A/S Dansk Jiffy Pot. Six machines were installed in this factory.


1963
Further expansion of the pot factory at Grorud.
Established a factory in Hokkaido, Japan, production capacity of about 50 million pots.


1964
April 1, as sales subsidiary established in Switzerland, under the name of Jiffy Pot AG, Zürich, in 1972
changed to Jiffy Products Ltd., Zürich.


1967
Production of Jiffy-7, a compressed peat pellet, was started at Stange, Hedmark, Norway.


1968
Established sales subsidiary in Nederland, Jiffy Pot Nederland N.V., in 1972 changed to Jiffy Products
Nederland B.V. Establishing of Jiffy-Scan, sales subsidiary for Scandinavia including Iceland.


1970
Production on the Stange factory expanded with 4 new machines. Total production capacity abt. 200 mill. peat pellets.


1972
Introduction of Jiffy-7 on tape.
The name A/S Jiffy Pot was changed to A/S Jiffy Products Limited. The reason for this was that the production was no longer limited to pots, but also included Jiffy-7 and other pressed peat products.The pot production was centralised in Denmark, and at the same time another company established under the name A/S Jiffy Pot Production. Pilot production Jiffy-9 started at Grorud.


1973
Jiffy Research & Service A/S was established in Norway as the Group's administration and service
company. At the same time Jiffy Products Ltd., Norway was extracted as a production company only (the production of Jiffy-7 at Stange).


1974
15 May, building of new factory at Stange, for Jiffy-7 started.
31 October, foundation stone placed.


1975
August, new factory, Stange, started up with 20 Jiffy-7 machines.
August, a subsidiary established in Canada, under the name of Jiffy Products (New Brunswick) Ltd.
September, building of new factory for pots, Canada, started.


1976
October, new factory, Canada, started up with 4 pot machines - capacity 100.000 cart.


1977
August, Johan G. Olsen Group, Kristiansand, Norway acquired Jiffy.


1978
Jiffy-9 production moved from Grorud to our factory at Stange.


1979
Trials were made with stapled Jiffy-7, and a machine was developed in this respect.


1980
Take over of Keyes Fibres market in North-America together with Jiffy Products of America, Inc.
Introduction of Jiffy-7 Poly Mat was successful, and a second packaging machine was needed.


1981
Pots in vacuum formed plastic developed
Plans were made for the start of pellet production in Canada.


1982
Size of Jiffy-7 reduced from 46 mm to 42 mm.
Jiffy-Pot Poly Pack launched. Expansion of factory in Canada - setting up a Jiffy-7 production plant.


1983
The new building for Jiffy-7 production and warehouse in Shippegan finished.
4 new Jiffy-7 machines were installed. Trials in forestry with Jiffy-7 (double height) started in Canada.


1984
Development of Jiffy-7 Poly Roll.



1985/1986
Negotiations with the Geo. J. Ball Inc., USA for acquisition of one of their divisions, Jiffy
Products of America. The acquisition was made in August, 1985.


1986
Development of 30 mm Jiffy-7 in Canada.


1987
Jiffy-7 30 mm introduced on the North-American market, and trials with 30 mm started in Europe.
Our U.K. operation moved from Crowborough to March in Cambridgeshire. In January the first Poly-Roll machine was installed at Stange, Norway.


1988
5th Jiffy-7 machine installed in Shippegan, Canada. Purchased the factory building in Ryomgaard, Denmark.


1989
The second Poly-Roll machine installed at Stange.
Re-opened our companies in Holland and France. (Jiffy Products Nederland B.V. and Jiffy France S.A.R.L.)


1990
Purchased Vefi Ellegaard in Denmark, and production moved form Esbjerg to Roymgaard (Jiffy-Block).


1991
Development of pots made of recycled paper. 6th Jiffy-7 machine installed in Canada, planning of
installing the 7th. Planning for starting production of 30 mm for the European market at Stange factory.


2002
Preforma Horti Systems B.V. taken over, and Preforma facilities in Norwalk/USA and Hoek van Holland
integrated in Jiffy. Preforma plantplugs becoming an important product in the Jiffy portfolio.


2002
Jiffy Products Germany GmbH established to serve the professional market in Germany.


 
2004
Manufacturing of Jiffy-7 started in Mirigama/Sri Lanka based on 100% coir substrate. 

 

2005

Jiffy International acquires Ferry-Morse Seed company based in Fulton, Kentuckey, USA.

 

2006

Jiffy starts up manufacturing of Preforma Plugs in Puerto Lumbreras, Spain.

Jiffy International acquires McKenzie Seeds, based in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.


2007
Jiffy opened a new facility for production of Preforma Plant Plugs in Yokohama, Japan.


2008
Jiffy acquires Tref BV, one of the leading substrate and potting soil companies in Europe. Tref has its
headquarters in Moerdijk, The Netherlands.
