Coconut fibre (Coir fibre)
Jiffy imports coconut fibre and specializes in the processing of this organic fibre. Coconut fibre is a high-quality stable fibre that is used in potting soil mixtures. Tref has a processing line for coconut fibre bales and produces a pre-mix of coconut fibre and peat.
This coconut fibre mix is an extremely suitable raw material to mix in potting soil mixtures to increase the organic fibre percentage. Jiffy imports the coconut fibre from Sri Lanka. It is a shredded fibre which means that it can also easily be used in the smaller pot sizes. The fibre meets the criteria for RHP certification in accordance with the chemical specifications just at the other coconut products do.
Coir fiber Pith (Coco pith)
Coir Fiber Pith or Coco Pith is a by-product after the extraction of the coir fibre from the coconut husk. Retting is a curing process during which the husks are kept in an environment that encourages the action of naturally occurring microbes. This action partially decomposes the husk's pulp, allowing it to be separated into coir fibers and a residue called coir pith.
It is a pure natural organic biodegradable matter. It is also an eco-friendly growing medium, ideally used as a pure substrate or as a component in potting soil mixtures. Coco pith is mainly imported from the Far East (Sri Lanka and India).
Coco pith must be buffered and rinsed with fertilizers to ensure they are RHP certified. The product must meet chemical specifications depending on the EC class. As it is a natural spongy medium that can be used as a growing medium, Coir Pith can replace peat moss as the best growing material for gardening and other horticultural needs. It is economical and a natural alternate for peat moss. Coco pith has good water absorption properties after drying. They improve the fast re-moisturizing of potting soil mixtures in the culture.
Husk Chips (Shredded husks)
When the Coconut husk around the coconut shell is not separated into Coco-fibre and Coco pith, but cut into slices and then crush in to pieces, we have Coco chips. This product is referred to as coarse coconut at Tref. This product must also meet chemical specifications just as do coco pith. The product must be buffered and rinsed with fertilizers after it has been shredded.
The standardization is the same as for the specifications for Coco pith. It is a slightly coarser coconut product that is used as a pure substrate in boards or containers for cut-flower cultivation. It is used as a component to make potting soils lighter in potting soil mixtures. Using Coco-chips as an additive in potting mixtures creates a growing medium with the ideal physical properties. The chips can absorb water and yet leave enough air available for sensitive plants.
